Garfield first used the SCUT to surprise Bill by popping into his VR simulation at a distance that would have been prohibitive due to the 6 minute lightspeed delay. SCUT was invented by Bill and Garfield in the Epsilon Eridani "Skunk Works" location. SCUT can be used for audio and voice communications, virtual reality, file transfers, transmitting backups of Bobs to other locations during emergencies, and, in one instance, was used to transmit a backup copy of a Bob to an unstaffed location to take over an uninhabited computer core. Space stations can act as relays for longer distances, essentially acting as routers and turning SCUT into an interstellar version of the Internet. SCUT is an acronym for Subspace Communications Universal Transceiver, which is a device in the Bobiverse that is capable of instantaneous communication over interstellar distances (up to 25 light years).
